The route takes you through semi-arid hills, long sandy stretches, quiet villages and wild coastal views.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Portela Viewpoint<\/span><\/b> is a must-stop: from here, the whole island unfolds beneath you, framed by sea and sky. Further ahead, we reached the <\/span>natural rock pools of Porto das Salemas<\/span><\/b> \u2014 a hidden gem where volcanic rock meets crystal-clear water, ideal for a quiet dip.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Back in <\/span>Vila Baleira<\/span><\/b>, we headed to the charming historical centre for a relaxed lunch. The main square is peaceful and full of character \u2014 cobbled pavements, palm-shaded terraces and a gentle pace of life. We recommend two welcoming and authentic spots: <\/span>Apollo 14<\/u><\/span><\/b><\/a> and <\/span>Baiana<\/u><\/span><\/b><\/a>. Both serve <\/span>grilled fish<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>meat skewers<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>bolo do caco<\/span><\/b> fresh from the oven, and of course, <\/span>Madeiran wine<\/span><\/b>. Apollo 14 also offers a great selection of <\/span>petiscos and light bites<\/span><\/b>, perfect for sharing or a casual meal. At Baiana, the local flavour blends with <\/span>Mediterranean touches<\/span><\/b>, featuring <\/span>fresh pasta dishes<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>artisan-style pizzas<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Right after lunch, we visited the <\/span>Christopher Columbus House Museum<\/span><\/b>, modest from the outside but filled with meaning. Legend has it Columbus lived here after marrying the daughter of the island\u2019s first governor. Inside, the museum showcases navigation instruments, maps, manuscripts and insights into the island\u2019s quiet role in the Age of Discovery.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The island boasts <\/span>nine uninterrupted kilometres<\/span><\/b> of soft, golden, mineral-rich sand and <\/span>clear, warm waters<\/span><\/b>. It\u2019s perfect for swimming, barefoot walks, or simply switching off.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before returning to the ferry, we paused at <\/span>P\u00e9 na \u00c1gua<\/span><\/b><\/a>, a laid-back beachfront caf\u00e9-bar with loungers, snacks and cocktails \u2014 the ideal spot to soak in the last light of day with your feet in the sand.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Skin still warm from the sun and our pace gently slowed, we enjoyed a light meal on deck, watching the final colours of the day unfold.<\/p>\n
