\"\"[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_column_text css=””]We arrived at Funchal<\/u> <\/a> harbour around 2:30 PM, with the sea breeze already hinting at the kind of afternoon we were about to have. The <\/span>SeaBorn catamaran<\/u><\/span><\/a> \u2014 spacious, white and gleaming in the sun \u2014 was ready for the 3:00 PM departure. We boarded early, claimed a sunbed at the front, and settled in with sun cream, sunglasses, and that quiet excitement only the ocean brings.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_column_text css=””]On deck, the atmosphere was relaxed and open. There were families, couples, and a few solo travellers like me \u2014 all soaking in the warmth. Next to us, a French family told us they\u2019d been on this same tour two years earlier. \u201cBack then we saw sea turtles,\u201d they said. \u201cThis time, we\u2019re hoping for whales.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”8863″ img_size=”full” css=””][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”8865″ img_size=”full” css=””][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”8868″ img_size=”full” css=””][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_column_text css=””]As we drifted away from the port, <\/span>the Funchal<\/u><\/span><\/a> skyline slowly faded, replaced by a horizon of endless Atlantic blue. The wind picked up gently, and voices softened \u2014 until someone at the bow shouted, \u201cLook!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And there they were.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dolphins. A whole group of them, arcing playfully through the waves, just metres from the boat. We rushed forward \u2014 everyone did \u2014 caught between filming and just being present. For a few minutes, it felt like time had paused.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_column_text css=””]Later, when we were further out at sea, a hush fell over the group. Another movement \u2014 slower this time, heavier \u2014 and suddenly, a whale surfaced in front of us. Majestic. Massive. Silent. It moved with such grace and calm that it took a few seconds for the reality to sink in. A wild whale, in the open ocean, metres from our boat.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The French family were ecstatic. \u201cThat\u2019s it \u2014 we\u2019ve seen it all,\u201d they laughed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”8871″ img_size=”full” css=””][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”8873″ img_size=”full” css=””][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]The surprises weren\u2019t over. As we approached the towering cliffs of <\/span>Cabo Gir\u00e3o<\/u><\/span><\/a>, the boat anchored. The water below was crystal clear, inviting and cool \u2014 a perfect stop for a swim. Cabo Gir\u00e3o is one of the highest sea cliffs in the world, but from down here, floating beneath it, it felt like another planet.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_single_image image=”8877″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]On the way back, the bar served cold drinks \u2014 a small but welcome luxury. I had only packed water, but that post-swim beer hit the spot.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Three hours after we\u2019d left, we returned to the harbour with salt on our skin, sun in our hair, and something else \u2014 that quiet joy that comes from an unexpected encounter with nature.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_single_image image=”8880″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n
