With its billowing sails and sturdy wooden hull, the Santa Maria de Colombo is a faithful replica of the vessel Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic in the 15th century. Crafted from mahogany, measuring 22 metres in length, and boasting three imposing masts, this ship invites you to embark on an authentic journey through time.

More than just a boat ride, this is an immersive experience where history and the sea merge into an unforgettable voyage along Madeira’s southern coast. The Find Madeira team set sail on this adventure to witness firsthand what makes this journey so special—and we can say, without hesitation: we loved it.

Departure from Funchal

The morning sun reflects off the calm waters of the harbour as we approach the majestic ship. The salty aroma of the sea mingles with the scent of aged wood, creating a unique atmosphere. Upon boarding, we’re greeted by a crew dressed in period costumes, welcoming us with warm smiles and inviting us to explore the corners of this historic vessel.

Madeira’s Southern Coast and the Moving Horizon

With sails hoisted, the Santa Maria de Colombo glides smoothly over the crystalline waters, offering a unique perspective of Madeira’s southern coastline. Majestic cliffs rise proudly, while hidden coves reveal their secret beauty. The sound of waves against the hull and the creaking of ropes in the wind transport us to a distant era, allowing us to imagine the adventures of navigators of old.

Dolphins and Moments of Silence

Suddenly, excitement fills the deck. A pod of dolphins approaches, swimming gracefully alongside the ship. Passengers rush to the railings, marvelling at the proximity of these fascinating creatures. The sea is calm, but the emotion is immense. The crew shares insights about the species inhabiting these waters, enriching this unforgettable encounter with wildlife.

A Swim beneath Cabo Girão

Off the coast of Cabo Girão, one of Europe’s highest sea cliffs, the ship anchors in deep blue waters. The invitation for a swim is irresistible. We dive into the refreshing waters, feeling a sense of freedom and a deep connection with the surrounding nature. Back on deck, we’re treated to a tasting of Madeira wine and traditional honey cake, flavours that encapsulate the island’s rich gastronomic culture.
