There are hotels where the ocean is just a view; at The Cliff Bay, it’s part of the experience. Perched on a natural promontory above Funchal, this five-star hotel literally stretches down to the Atlantic, amid gardens, pools, and waterfront decks.

The Cliff Bay occupies one of the most privileged locations in Funchal’s hotel district. Perched above the ocean, yet close enough to the city center to keep the city within easy reach, the hotel’s greatest luxury is its setting: on one side, the bay and the harbor; on the other, the open Atlantic.
The connection to the sea goes far beyond the balconies. One of the property’s most unique features is direct access to the Atlantic Ocean through the Sea Level area, which includes a sun deck, a waterfront platform, and a saltwater pool. There is also an outdoor pool, an indoor pool, and hot tubs, allowing guests to alternate between the comfort of the hotel and a dip in the ocean. The access to the sea is even certified as a designated swimming area.
The gardens help set the tone of the hotel. Ancient palm trees, secluded nooks, and subtropical vegetation line the paths that wind down through the property, creating a sense of refuge despite the urban setting.
At the spa, the Atlantic comes back into view. There are personalized treatments, a Spa Suite with a jacuzzi and a view of Funchal Bay, and, seasonally, an outdoor area for massages.
The cuisine is another major draw. Il Gallo d’Oro, led by Chef Benoît Sinthon, holds two Michelin stars and serves Mediterranean- and Iberian-inspired cuisine that features a strong emphasis on local ingredients.
The result is a hotel that preserves a classic notion of luxury, yet is grounded in very tangible pleasures: waking up to a view of the ocean, strolling through the gardens, swimming in the Atlantic, and ending the day at one of Madeira’s most renowned restaurants.
