The Editory Ocean Way Funchal

A contemporary hotel in Ajuda, between the Lido, Praia Formosa and the Atlantic

In Funchal’s more contemporary quarter, The Editory Ocean Way faces the Atlantic. Its 98 rooms are joined by three pools, a spa, gardens and a rooftop made for lingering.

On the western side of Funchal, Ajuda belongs to the city’s more contemporary Madeira: clean-lined hotels, tropical gardens, terraces and the coastal stretch running from the Lido to Praia Formosa. Set apart from the bustle of the Old Town, yet only a short drive from the historic centre, The Editory Ocean Way Funchal opens directly towards the Atlantic.
Its 98 rooms and suites are arranged across six floors, with many looking out to sea. The interiors favour light, comfort and an understated sense of polish — equally suited to a quiet holiday, a work trip or a few days divided between the city and the coast.
The hotel unfolds at different levels. Beside the gardens, two outdoor pools make the most of Funchal’s mild climate. The Fennel Spa offers a more sheltered retreat, with a heated indoor pool, sauna and Turkish bath. Six floors up, Afe-Nafe moves the conversation to the rooftop, with a jacuzzi, drinks, snacks and an uninterrupted horizon.
Food follows the same contemporary register. ABRA moves through the day from breakfast to dinner, drawing on Mediterranean and Madeiran flavours. Levada, beside the lobby, takes care of coffee, cocktails and light dishes.
Outside, the seafront promenade, the Lido and Praia Formosa are close at hand. The old centre is within an easy drive for dinner, a visit to the market or a morning among museums and historic streets — yet distant enough for the pace to soften again on returning.
Not to be missed: Head up to Afe-Nafe in the late afternoon, order a drink and watch the light slowly recede across the Atlantic.
