The Funchal Cathedral, known locally as Sé Catedral, is a striking example of Gothic architecture located in the heart of Madeira's capital.

Completed in 1514, it is one of the few structures that have survived intact from the early period of Portuguese colonization. The cathedral's exterior is a blend of Gothic and Manueline styles, featuring a unique tower made from local basalt stone. Inside, visitors are greeted by a stunning wooden ceiling crafted from local cedar, intricately carved and reminiscent of Moorish designs. The altarpiece, adorned with Flemish paintings and gilded woodwork, adds to the cathedral's grandeur. Sé Catedral remains an active place of worship and a symbol of Funchal’s rich cultural and religious heritage. It’s a must-see for those interested in history, architecture, and the spiritual life of the island.
