Fortaleza de São Tiago, constructed in the early 17th century, is one of Funchal's most iconic landmarks, embodying the city's resilience against pirate raids.

Strategically located along the coastline of the Zona Velha, this fort was designed to strengthen the island’s defenses during a time when piracy posed a significant threat to Madeira.
Construction began in 1614 under the supervision of Reais Jerónimo Jorge, a royal master builder, and was completed by his son, Bartolomeu João. The military architecture reflects the strategic needs of the period, with its robust walls and a commanding position offering sweeping views of the Atlantic.
Over the centuries, the fort underwent several modifications and fulfilled various roles. It housed British troops, served as a base for the Military Police, and even sheltered victims of the devastating 1803 floods. Each chapter of its history has left an indelible mark on the structure.
Today, Fortaleza de São Tiago draws visitors with its historical significance and breathtaking views of the ocean. Nestled in the heart of the Zona Velha, one of Funchal's most vibrant and historic districts, it is a must-see destination for anyone exploring Madeira’s rich cultural heritage.
