Nestled above the city of Funchal, the Convento de Santa Clara is one of Madeira’s most important religious and historical sites.

Founded in 1492, this former convent was a retreat for nuns for over four centuries. Its walls are adorned with intricate azulejos, traditional Portuguese tiles, which depict religious scenes. Visitors will be enchanted by the peaceful cloisters and the beautifully gilded altarpiece in the main chapel.
An added historical dimension to the convent is that it houses the tomb of João Gonçalves Zarco, the island’s discoverer. His remains rest in this sacred space, a reminder of the deep historical roots that this building has within the Madeira story. This hidden gem offers an escape from the hustle of modern Funchal, giving visitors a quiet, reflective space to soak in the history of the island.
Hopening Hours: Monday to Friday, 10:00 am to 12:00 and 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm
