Desertas Islands Nature Reserve

A rugged sanctuary for endangered species

The Desertas Islands Nature Reserve is a rugged, isolated haven located southeast of Madeira.

This group of three barren islands—Ilhéu Chão, Deserta Grande, and Bugio—forms a critical sanctuary for endangered species, including the Mediterranean monk seal, one of the rarest seal species in the world. The reserve was established in 1990 to protect these fragile ecosystems and the unique flora and fauna they support. Visitors to the Desertas Islands are limited, with strict regulations in place to minimize human impact. However, organized boat tours offer a glimpse into this untouched wilderness, where the dramatic landscapes are characterized by steep cliffs, rocky shores, and clear blue waters teeming with marine life. The Desertas Islands are not only a refuge for wildlife but also a testament to the importance of preserving natural habitats in their purest form.
