Avista Restaurant & Lounges

Mediterranean dining with one of Funchal’s finest Atlantic views.

At Avista, the Atlantic fills the entire room. Perched above the cliffs, Mediterranean cooking, sharing plates, afternoon tea and cocktails come with a view that can stop conversation mid-sentence.

The dining room appears to rest on the edge of the ocean. Beyond its broad glass walls, the coastline curves around Pirates’ Bay while the Atlantic continues uninterrupted towards the horizon. Tables sit close enough to the cliff for the sea to become part of the meal — bright and vivid by day, almost abstract after dark.
Set within Les Suites at The Cliff Bay, Avista has been conceived for different moments of the day. At lunch, clear island light floods the room and brings the horizon within reach. In the afternoon, tea revisits a classic ritual with a lighter, less formal touch. By dinner, the coastline has faded into shadow, leaving reflections, low lighting and the sound of the water below.
The menu begins in the Mediterranean, with occasional Asian inflections and a natural inclination towards sharing. Petiscos, à la carte dishes and vegetarian options arrive at the centre of the table in a style that feels contemporary and relaxed, while remaining carefully judged. This is cooking designed for ordering widely, lingering over the meal and allowing the table to follow the pace of the conversation.
Outside, the lounges extend the experience among greenery, deep seating and a fireplace that comes into its own after sunset. The drinks list moves between wine, classic cocktails and more adventurous house creations — good reason to arrive before dinner or remain after dessert.
A continuous presence in the Michelin Guide since 2020 and selected again for 2026, Avista finds its character in the meeting of food, architecture and landscape. The view may prompt a first visit; the way the restaurant changes through the day encourages a return.
