Surrounded by one of Madeira’s most beautiful gardens, Oxalis turns the landscape, the seasons and local produce into an elegant and intimate fine dining experience, deeply rooted in its setting.

At the historic Casa Velha do Palheiro, Oxalis takes its name from the vivid pink flower that appears across the estate’s lawns each spring. Delicate and naturally attuned to its surroundings, the flower reflects the restaurant’s philosophy: respect for nature, close attention to the seasons and a kitchen that evolves throughout the year.
Menus follow the natural cycle of the land, drawing on local and seasonal produce, herbs from the gardens and carefully selected Madeiran and Portuguese suppliers. The approach is contemporary, precise and elegant, while remaining closely connected to the island’s identity.
The setting is central to the experience. Surrounded by century-old gardens, Casa Velha do Palheiro provides a discreet and refined backdrop for unhurried dinners, where the landscape and the cooking remain in constant conversation.
itself as one of Madeira’s most distinctive fine dining addresses, with a strong emphasis on ingredient quality, seasonality and a thoughtful approach to sustainability.
Every Monday, from 5.30pm to 6pm, the Meet the Chef experience offers a closer look at the restaurant’s philosophy. Chef Gonçalo Bita Bota leads guests through the gardens, discusses sustainable practices and ingredient sourcing, and ends the visit by selecting a fresh herb to be incorporated into dinner that evening.
